Under pressure to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA), aka ObamaCare, Republicans in the House recently passed a new plan titled the American Health Care Act (AHCA), which is being called Trumpcare. The new bill aligns with older conservative views from past healthcare reform debates, but still contains elements of the old ACA. Initially, the total cost of this new healthcare proposals is estimated at nearly half a trillion dollars more than Obamacare over a decade, while doubling the number of people without health insurance.
There are 75 million people on Medicaid today; it’s the second largest source of insurance coverage. Employee coverage is first. The new bill will have major changes in the way Medicaid is funded. First, the federal support of expanded Medicaid to 133 percent of the federal poverty line will be rolled back. States that currently offer Medicaid to people below 138 percent of the poverty level will no longer receive extra funds for new expansion candidates after 2020, which will curtail coverage for many.
The lesson to be gained from all of this is: healthcare providers must now — more than ever — be prepared to closely monitor their revenue cycles. Regardless of whether ObamaCare stays or TrumpCare prevails, revenue cycle management is going to become the most critical activity in healthcare, right after providing patient care.
